“ Had a lovely week in the cottage. Particularly enjoyed lighting the fire even though it was warm enough, Claire loved it. Sherkin was fab! very relaxing place, beaches were great. Weather picked up great for us, went to Barley Cove and Mizen Head. Fantastic places! Thanks again will definitely recommend it to any of our friends. ”

“ Joan, having visited in July 2011 (9th - 16th), we returned to experience the beautiful Baltimore and your lovely hospitality, this time with our 5 month old daughter Martha. Again, we had a wonderful time and found lots to do that we missed the last time ... visiting Sherkin Island, finding Tralispeen Beach and dining in the Glebe restaurant. Martha really enjoyed her 1st holiday especially the early morning walks around Ballymacrown and Lough Hyne, so beautiful and peaceful. We hope to return in the future. ”

Sarah and Davy, July 2015 – Co. Meath

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“ Joan, we have had such a relaxing and peaceful holiday here in Baltimore! The scenary is stunning and the weather fantastic. Last night we watched an amasing sunset. We have feasted on fabulous local food and highly recommend Glebe restaurant! The raspberries and strawberries from your garden were delicious and many thanks for the lovely 'Welcome Pack'. We visited Sherkin Island, Inish Beg, climbed Knockamagh Hill above Lough Hyne (as keen walkers these three were highlights for us) walked in Union Hall, Glandore and Castletownsend - even wet the toes in Tralispeen! And after each excursion it was lovely to come back here to this cosy haven and put the feet up with a good book! Thank you for your lovely holiday and thanks to Peter for his warm welcome on arrival. ”

Janet and Keith, July 2015 – Co. Wexford

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“ As many before us have said - this was a perfect week - very cosy cottage, inspiring garden, juciest strawberries for the picking, very welcoming - and that is before you get out the Gate! Loved Lough Hyne, eventually found Trelispeen (advise double check directions!); and Tragumna ... hours of swimming in crystal clear water - devine! Great West Cork food everywhere - especially liked Glebe Gardens. ..Oh to stay longer .. but alas another time. ”

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“What a fantastic week we have had, an amazing Island to spend our honeymoon, which was made even better by our warm welcome of Joan, what an amazing and warm person, will be sad to leave tomorrow. Would thoroughly suggest you visit Bantry and Sherkin Island, Cape Clear during the summer. And keep your eyes open for the seals at Baltimore Harbour. We were gutted that we did not see ‘whales and dolphins’, but time ran out. We are going home very chilled and could easily move here, if I could bring the rest of the family from Wales with me.”

Oct 2011 – North Wales, UK

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“Despite the fog (most of the week!) we managed to experience and enjoy this delightful part of Ireland. We even managed a boat trip with Nic Slocum (lovely man) and saw porpoises, seal and lots of birds. Well recommended. If you like walking Ringarogy Island is a very pleasant, easy walk with some lovely views. Bantry and Glengariff are worth a visit and Mizen Head spectacular – but get there well before 5pm! Joan is a friendly and charming hostess. We will return to this lovely area.”

Went kayaking beside Castletownsend was fantastic will definitely be trying again. Food in Casey’s was very good and Mary Annes in Castletownsend was amazing. You’re very lucky people, love where you live, can’t wait to come back.”

“Thank you for a very enjoyable and memorable week here at the Croft. We have found this little cottage to be cosy and welcoming place. The welcome package was very much appreciated. The honesty basket is a special touch. It has been a great base to explore the area – a great day on Sherkin Island, a trip to the Beara Peninsula & Mizen Head. Visiting so many of the little harbour villages has been a treat. Your generosity in sharing your garden produce also is something we will remember, especially at Christmas. Gregory has been an added feature too!”

“My first trip to Ireland (Martin), Jin came here as a very young girl to stay with her grandparents on Cape Clear – also place of birth of Jin’s Mum – so a bit of a ‘Memory lane’, trip. We have had a lovely time despite the weather. We had of course the trip to Cape Clear which we thoroughly enjoyed. Managed some walks and car trip on the ‘Ring of Beara’. The cottage is all we hoped for and hospitality second to none. We endorse all the favourable comments made by former guests.”

Sep 2011 – Southampton, UK

(holiday home - The Croft)

“We were looking for a relaxing break and that’s exactly what the Gallery provided. Add to that the very warm welcome, the fantastic views, wonderful seafood at several places in Baltimore, and a great seafood chowder on Cape Clear and you have the ingredients for a very special mix. This all baked together by Joan. Thank you for a wonderful time.”

“Thanks a lot for this lovely stay at the Croft. We were really looking forward to it after travelling from one place to the next in the past 10 days and it proved even better than we had hoped. It is such a nice spot in a beautiful surrounding. Thanks very much to your hearty welcome, the wonderful welcome pack, the scones, the tomatoes and spices in your garden. Thank you also for your good advice for trips – we had a lovely afternoon at Tralispeen Beach, enjoyed the trip to Mizen Head and even had a crab sandwich at Crookhaven. We had a lovely week and even enjoyed the two rainy days in this cosy cottage with a warming fire. We’ll tell our children about this nice place and hope to  be back ourselves sometime in the future.”

“I am sitting here at the window of the Gallery, watching the sunset and I could not be more at peace after what I can only describe as a magical week here at Ballymacrown Homestead. Joan you have literally thought of everything to make our stay complete from the delicious welcome pack to the directions to Tralispeen – where we built sand castles. This is just the perfect place for our little family and we will tell Noah great stories of his first holiday for many years to come.”

Aug 2011 – Drogheda, Co. Louth

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“We enjoyed our stay at the Croft, which we found very comfortable. Many thanks for the welcome pack which was most appreciated after a long drive from Dublin. The attention to detail, made to the Croft to make our stay as comfortable as possible, really made a difference. We will remember the cockerels, ducks and Lily the cat as they all added to the experience of our stay in the Irish countryside.”

Aug 2011 – Hayling Island, Hampshire, UK

(holiday home - The Croft)

“A previous guest noted that all the superlatives had been used and we wouldn’t argue with that! A beautiful place where you can be as busy or as lazy as you wish. Joan’s care and attention are excellent. Swimming in the sea at Tralispeen is breathtaking (literally!), walks on Sherkin are stunning; the Famine exhibition at the Heritage Centre in Skibbereen is worth a visit (14lbs of potatoes per person!!) and the food wherever we’ve been to has been lovely (Casey’s, Sibin, Jolie Brise, Jolly Roger (Sherkin) and Lighthouse Cafe. Great Photos too!”

Aug 2011 – West Yorkshire, UK

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“We wish we could stay longer, the cottage and surrounding area are perfect and we have been very lucky with the weather, (even that hasn’t stopped us having 3 fires – by last night we think we have perfected the technique!). We very much enjoyed the BBQ too. We would recommend turning right out of the cottage and walking to Baltimore. Sherkin Island should not be missed – beautiful beach tucked away. The market at Skibbereen on Saturday fed us for days (+ they have wonderful cakes at the Bantry market on Fridays). Kenmare is worth the journey – be sure to find the Cromwell Bridge, and Glengariff is worth stopping off at. Beware very windy roads between the 2! Thank you Joan for making this a brilliant week. We will miss all the characters and very much hope Mr. Fox goes elsewhere for his supper!”

Jul 2011 – Oxford, UK

(holiday home - The Croft)

“What an amazing place to stay – from the moment we arrived to the fabulous welcome pack to our last day exploring the deserted fishing village and the beach at Tralispeen – we have had an amazing time. Joan’s hospitality is second to none! And the Gallery is the most romantic place to stay, so much so that Paul proposed to me on our 3rd day here on the banks of Lough Hyne! – A first for the Homestead! Casey’s is highly recommended – in the absence of a taxi the bar man gave us a lift home! The welcome and warmness of this place has left me with a renewed faith in people and life in general. We will be back.”

Jul 2011 – Dawn & Paul, UK

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“Many thanks for the wonderful stay at Ballymacrown. We have had a wonderful holiday here in Ireland with fantastic weather and we really do not want to go home. The welcome pack was delicious and set us up for some wonderful picnics around the beautiful coves and hilltops of Southern Ireland. Thank you also for the broccoli and peas they were delicious! We have also made great friends with Gregory, Lenny etc mainly through their love of custard creams! We could not recommend this place highly enough to any of our family or friends and hope to be back ourselves very soon.”

Jun 2011 – Dublin

(holiday home - The Croft)

“Congratulations to you both for making Ballymacrown Homestead a truly very special and magical place. Your ever growing list of clients have unfortunately for us used all the ‘Superlative’ word descriptions for the ‘Gallery’ and surrounding envirions, to which we would totally agree with Michael & Catherine, our friends, who have spent two holidays here – thank you for recommending Ballymacrown Homestead to us. Thank you Joan for keeping natures natural ‘alarm clock’ set for least 9am – at which time, both ‘cocks’ must have been pretty frustrated at not getting out. The all-inclusive entertainment programme is not highlighted on your website – but daily performances by your ducks and cocks certainly added to the enjoyment of you holidays! Culinary delights – new potatoes and fresh mint – rhubarb & beans from the garden – Thanks again.”

Jun 2011 – Dublin

(holiday home - The Gallery)

“We have both had a fantastic time, the Gallery was lovely and relaxing with amazing views. We enjoyed watching the chickens and ducks run around outside the door and little visits from the cats. The welcome pack was excellent and provided a good start to the holiday. Would recommend going to Lough Hyne and walking up hill – amazing views. We also rented snorkel equipment from Aquaventures and snorkelled in the Lough – fantastic. Thanks Joan & David for a lovely warm welcome – we will be telling everyone about our excellent stay.”

Jun 2011 – Essex

“Probably the best holiday cottage we have had anywhere in Europe. Joan & David are also wonderful hosts and very helpful with local tips. Joan’s soda bread is to die for and the welcome pack very generous. Of course the cats and other animals add to the pleasure – home from home. The Church in Skibbereen is great for lunch, and Bantry House and the gardens at Garinish Island at Glengariff are worth a journey. Mizen Head Peninsular is a great choice for a day’s car tour. Thank you for a great holiday.”

“David and Joan thank you so much for making this a very special holiday for us. The Gallery is a perfect escape. The view from the window was a beautiful way to start the day. We loved the natural way you live here. The ducks, roosters and cats were brilliant company. We especially enjoyed watching the ducks become friends after a shaky start and Lenny (the duck) eyeing up every movement of the homestead. We are already thinking about getting our first chickens! You’ve inspired us! And who could forget the tomatillo! The scenery and countryside is beautiful. I think I can safely say we went to every craft shop in West Cork. The highlights were many – drinking tea from china cups in Kenmare, Mizen Head, Pitch & Putt at Rosscarbery and Fish & Chips at Longs & Rocs. We also enjoyed getting to know you all and all the tips on cooking (thanks David). We hope to see you again.”

"Thank you for a very warm welcome. We have really enjoyed our stay at The Croft. The welcome pack and freshly baked soda bread & scones were a lovely addition. We have enjoyed great weather, lovely people and great views – hope to return again in the not too distant future. The Croft is a very cosy cottage where it is easy to relax and enjoy the comfort with no additional cost. Thank you once again.”

“We have had a lovely few days break for our anniversary. Cottage full of charm, views breathtaking and we were very lucky with some sunny weather! Totally in awe of this beautiful area, have been to Kerry a few years ago but think the West of Cork is even more stunning. Baltimore very quaint, Barleycove sand dunes lovely. Crookhaven, Mizen Head, Bantry Bay, Glengariff, where we visited the seal colony on a boat and Rolfs Country House where we had a gorgeous meal. All will stay in our minds for a long time, really don’t want to go home! A big thank you to Joan & Dave for being so welcoming and friendly, the welcome pack was lovely especially the homemade soda bread! And it was lovely to have chickens and ducks on the doorstep!”

"We had a wonderful holiday here in the Gallery, we were exactly where we wanted to be. We visited four islands during our fortnight - Cape Clear, Sherkin, Heir (for the restaurant) and the beautiful Ringarogy. It was lovely to come back every evening to Ballymacrown and to wake up each day to beautiful weather and scenery. Thanks so much for your hospitality and for making this place available to us city dwellers!"

"This is the perfect base to explore West Cork - the cottage and the welcome exceeded our expectations (as nearly everyone here has said before us). Things we would endorse are the trip to Union Hall for wonderful fish; the trip to Cape Clear - amazing on a sunny day; the tin pub in Ahakista (only open in the summer) which has one of the most beautiful settings for a pint of Guinness out the back; watching the world go by from outside Bushes Bar in Baltimore and an outdoor musical gig at Glebe Gardens (Andy Irvine no less!). This is the perfect spot to recharge your batteries. And take a walk to Spain - really extraordinary on a sunny day when the light hits those walls and houses. Thanks for making this such a great stay Joan, David and the menagerie."

"Thank you David & Joan for a wonderful week in a very comfortable and homely setting. The detail just made Ballymacrown stand out - the welcome goodies, scones, very thoughtful box of toys for our 4 year old and even some sunshine. Nice to meet you all and thank you for your hospitality. We are very fond of West Cork and hope to be back - Highly recommend island trips as well as local - went to Cape Clear and Heir Island on this trip. Both great!

"As I sit here to write this, the sun is shining - for the 7th day in a row! - displaying this fantastic scenery at its best. I can just about see Mizen peninsula. We've had an amazing week. This has been the ideal spot to start out honeymoon - cosy and in a great spot. We've been very impressed with the welcome as well as the attention to detail. We've always loved West Cork - hence deciding to get married here - but this week its been more beautiful than I've ever seen it before. The walk to Spain one evening was lovely - hedgerows amazing this time of year. We ate loads in La Jolie Brise and (of course) Glebe Gardens. We highly recommend the latter for lunch or dinner. We're very sad to be leaving - but we'll be back. Thanks so much."

"Thank you for a lovely week in your beautiful cottage. The welcome pack and scones were much enjoyed. We have managed to explore the local coastline in generally sunny conditions and certainly partaken of a lot of very good Irish cooking. We will certainly be recommending Ireland and your cottage to friends as a welcome retreat from the hassle of life at work."

"This has been an excellent stay made more memorable for the generous hospitality from Joan & Dave. The views and scenery around here are stunning, with lots to see and do. We had a day out to Killarney and the views of the snow capped mountains is breathtaking, and the drive through the village of Kenmare is great. The food at Casey's and Sibin is great and the folk music and dancing at Sibin Bar is great fun on a saturday night."

"Thankyou for a wonderful relaxing holiday. A few years ago I worked on the new editions of the charts of Roaring Water Bay and promised I'd come to see it for myself sometime. The weather has been perfect, warm days, sunshine and blue skies. We explored this part of the world and can't wait to come back in the summer to make better use of the beaches. The Croft has been a wonderful place to stay, with everything we needed - thanks for the home baking - a real treat. We will be recommending you to family and friends"

"Thank you for the warm welcome! We've had a great stay here, the best holiday in ages!!! Thank you for the welcome pack and the lovely scones. We've had some lovely hikes and as photographers we've been able to find some great motives to shoot. Especially up at the Beacon where we had the ocean roaring, that was really amazing. We will definitely be back to explore more of this area."

Thank you David & Joan for the wonderful Irish hospitality! ... Our stay at the cottage exceeded our expectations and we would definitely recommend this part of Ireland & the Croft to our friends. We enjoyed our hikes at Priest's Leap outside Bantry & Lough Hyne the most & found the selection of restaurants in Kinsale splendid.

"..ein herzliches Daukescron fur Eure Gastfreundscraft!!!.. we thought we would drop some German in as well!

Well, what can we say. We have thoroughly enjoyed every day  here in this wonderful part of the world. We have always had the wish to come and visit this lovely country and indeed did not get disappointed. As we told you on our first day of arrival, it felt like we knew this place already. Driving down here from Dublin was like going home. And you all made us feel being at home. Thank you so much for your hospitality! We did enjoy our welcome pack. Our fry ups in the morning were a real treat. David thanks for recommending all those lovely places to us ... Please keep a good eye on our four friends (the ducks) since we will be back for sure. This won't be our last visit to Ballymacrown Homestead."

Sep 08 - Cologne, Germany

This is a delightful cottage in a wonderful place. The views are spectacular, and your generous hospitality has made us feel very welcome. The islands are great for walking - we got out to Sherkin, Clear and Heir: all have fabulous views and interesting wildlife. Baltimore is lovely. We can recommend Chez Youen for their excellent fish, and the pizzas down the road at La Jolie Brise are good too. Oh, and your home grown garlic is so good, we're taking what's let home with us!!

"What a great 2 weeks. The cottage is beautiful with everything you would ever need whilst on holiday. Thank you so much Joan and David for making us so welcome and introducing us to this lovely corner of Ireland. There is so much more we would like to see we will have to come back! and I want to finish 'Mc Carthy's Bar'."

Jun 08 - Lanc, UK

"We have had a lovely time here in the cottage and fortunate to have some great weather. Thank you for the welcome pack and the scones - they were lovely! We managed to pack in lots over the past five days and would recommend the dolphin and whale watching with Colin Barnes. It was a little too early to see whales but a few porpoises, seals and bright sunny day made it worth while. We really hope to come back again at a different time of year and go and see some other sites."

Apr 08 - Sevenoaks, UK

"Thank you for letting us stay in your delightful little cottage. We absolutely love it and it has been the perfect place for our honeymoon and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here...
